What counts toward the Texas 3-hour ethics requirement, and how to verify that you have the right courses.
Texas requires 3 ethics hours per renewal cycle, included in your total. Ethics must be TDI-designated on Sircon — not every course with "ethics" in the title qualifies.
An ethics CE course must be TDI-approved and designated in the Ethics category on Sircon. Verify the category in Sircon's Approved Courses Inquiry before enrolling — a course with "ethics" in the title that is categorized as General will not satisfy the requirement.
The Ethics category is a specific TDI designation, not just a topic description. A course on ethical conduct that is filed under General or Elective will not count toward your ethics requirement, even if the content is entirely about ethics.
Most licensees need 3 ethics hours per two-year renewal cycle. Ethics hours are part of your total — they do not add to it. A 24-hour license needs 3 ethics hours within those 24, not in addition to them. A 10-hour limited license still requires the same 3 ethics hours within its 10 total hours.
Do not rely on course completion certificates alone — a certificate does not guarantee that the course was filed under the Ethics category on Sircon.
Many agents complete a course with "ethics" in the title that is categorized as General or Elective on Sircon. Only courses in the TDI Ethics category satisfy the ethics requirement. Always check Sircon's Approved Courses Inquiry before enrolling.
Yes. A course can count toward both your ethics requirement and your classroom-equivalent (CLEQ) requirement at the same time, as long as it is approved in the Ethics category and meets the CLEQ standard under 28 TAC 19.1009(h). Many 12-hour bundle packages include a 3-hour ethics component that satisfies both requirements. See CLEQ explainer →
